Yes, actually, I was watching a documentary on a Son and his wife from South Korea smuggling his mother in from the North and it really touched me.

The first half is actually a cold war joke that was common in East Germany way back when!

really interesting piece kenny….in the paring of these two together…and how their meanings interplay with and inform on each other as they are very different on the surface….ah we never really appreciate how good we have it…

Agree that first is brilliant in its set up.

Second: Mother will be happy to learn the new ways,
Of feeding children soup.

Don’t know if I have misunderstood the poems message – but my thoughts are that this final line encapsulates the poems theme?

What these do for me is make me grateful that I live where I live,,,that doesn’t seem an adequate comment some how because the poem is very powerful in the stories it tells,,,I find the situations very difficult to hear,,,it makes me feel helpless and unable to be of any use,,,

When you meet your lover you don’t count on the losing part,,,,the getting sick part,,,you think it will last forever, it doesn’t, who wants to learn that lesson? I like the lines,,,
“You argue over the movies he likes,
Can not stand the way he shuffles,”
I like it all actually,,,it’s sad but true,,,
